About

Process

GetCon.info was run entirely by me, Alyssa. I would click through every single website in the Database, making sure that applications were indeed Open, Closed, Coming Soon, etc making sure all dates were correct, and also checking that additional information like the genre and relevant pricing were updated.

Once the Database update was complete, I would update the Paid newsletter emails with any changes to each region and schedule the emails to go out each Tuesday at 6pm. There were a few more admin steps in the background because I uses Squarespace for the website, Gumroad for managing subscription payments and Mailchimp for the email newsletter but these services only did so much.

Each week, it would take me about 20 hours (sometimes more) to update the database, search for new events, update the emails and schedule them to be sent out. I would also occasionally send out various emails to people who are subscribed to the FREE newsletter, which mostly consisted of reminders, helpful articles or tools, and website announcements.

If you’re doing conventions, you appreciate how valuable our time is, especially when you’re working alone. I also currently have a part-time job to help pay my bills (student loans, amirite?) while I also have a freelance career in animation & illustration. We’re all super busy, so sometimes I might miss a Premium newsletter issue when things get especially busy. But please bear in mind that you are getting approximately 80 hours of my time for $0.99 or $4.99, depending on what you have purchased from our Gumroad store.

History

GetCon.Info was created out of necessity by me, Alyssa. As a vendor myself, I noticed how there wasn't a central, organized hub of information. Finding new conventions, fairs, shows, etc required visiting a bajillion different sites and exhausting word of mouth. Even when you did find a solid list of shows you would like to attend, catching the application was becoming increasingly difficult as each show's behavior and processes were so wildly different from the next.

I started tracking all shows I found in a Google Doc and within a year, it expanded to a real Database with hundreds of entries.

GetCon.Info was a home to the citizens of Artist Alleys, Craft's Corners, Dealer's Dens, Vendor Halls, etc! I wanted to create a place where you could learn all the ins and outs of what it means to be a Modern Con Artist minus the bad karma.
